Dear Member,
As most of you are aware, the tennis section had declined significantly over the last few years to a point that it has only survived by extensive efforts expended by Jon Sherlock who, together with Paul Clarke and a few loyal players, have maintained our position in the North East Cheshire League
The fundamental problem was that as other clubs improved their facilities, ours deteriorated and hence we were unable to attract new members or even retain existing ones. For the last 2/3 years we have not even had any courts but that’s all changed now with the amalgamation of Mersey and the Rugby Club. The monies realised from the sale of the tennis courts & part of the rugby club has funded not only the construction of a great new clubhouse (due to be handed over in early April) but also four floodlit artificial grass courts. Importantly, we have secured the services of Paul Mannion as tennis coach and his brief will include launching an active coaching development programme encompassing juniors group & individual coaching, adult beginners/intermediate & advanced. A copy pamphlet outlining Paul’s details is enclosed. The committee (Jon Sherlock, Paul Clarke, Paul Mannion & I) plan to run fun-days, tournaments & social games throughout the summer season. I very much wish to encourage the other sections to utilise the courts and become regular social &/or team players and I extend an open invitation to you, your wife/girlfriend, sons/daughters & friends, to join & play. We are opening the season officially on Sunday 23rd April with a junior coaching session in the morning starting at 11am and senior tennis starting at 2pm in the afternoon however; the courts are available now so if you do want to arrange a game, please feel free to do so. As I mentioned for the last few years, we have only managed to maintain one gent’s team but we have now had a second Gents team accepted into Division 6a of the League. As we do not yet have enough lady players for a team, we have arranged two friendly mixed matches however, one of the coach’s targets is to have a ladies team in the league for the 2007 season but in the meantime, we are planning some more friendlies in the summer. Depending on the response, we also wish to enter a mixed team in the winter league, which starts in October. Please feel free to call or email me on any point. Kind Regards. Yours sincerely, Peter Peter J. Davies Hon Tennis Secretary 01707 872024 & 07885 248561
