Gents Second team v Macclesfield PDF Print E-mail

The team travelled to Macclesfield for their second match. It turned out to be a very closely contested affair with the opposition turning out three consistent couples & had, as their third couple, one excellent player & one very awkward hacker.  When your thirds can get four sets as they did, it takes significant pressure off the other team members.

Mersey’s first couple consisted of Peter Sherlock & Peter Davies who played like the seasoned veterans (Latin for old!) they are.  The Peters won all six sets in relative comfort but the final event against Macc’s supposed third couple became a bit of a battle because of the failing light.

Andy Davies teamed up with Dan Burns, who impressed with his heavy serving and an effective backhand.  Unfortunately, whilst they did win a set, they lost a tie break against the thirds & did not manage to win any other sets.

Tony Metters & Steve Stackable again played third couple and were showing distinct signs of knitting as a couple but they lost three tie-break sets which was most unlucky but at least it bodes well for the future.

The final score was a 7-11 defeat.

Next Match v West Heaton (Away) Tuesday 6th June.
