On a blustery and chilly evening, Mere came to Heaton Mersey to attempt to avenge their 6-7 drubbing from earlier in the season.
They had selected a crack, youthful team of big hitters and only one of their previous team had survived the selection process from the team we played at our earlier encounter. Heaton Mersey fielded the experienced pairing of Dave Lennie and Andy Kent as the first pair, the young and talented Max Sherlock and steady and dependable Anthony Jones in seconds and the 3rd pair was the electrically fast Chris Hynes and Jerry Fynn. The first round failed to see Heaton Mersey make an impression on this talented team of youngsters. The second rubber was similarly difficult with our first pair, after a very strong start and an extremely long lasting round, narrowly losing their first set on a tie-break before winning the second set with a convincing 6-4 performance. Unfortunately, this was the only set won by the home team during the evening and with the light rapidly fading and time running out, only our 3rd pair managed to complete any more sets under the harsh electric glow of the floodlights. The final score line of 1-13 was perhaps slightly flattering to the visitors although there was no doubting the strength and talent of opposition team. All in all, both teams thoroughly enjoyed the match and the post-match hospitality and I would like to thank all the players that turned out for their participation and making the evening so enjoyable. We now look forward to the next fixture on Wednesday, away at Cheadle. |
