Sunday 22nd November Away fixture Claremont Timperley
A couple of injuries and illness meant a couple of substitutions had to be made with Dave playing instead of Jerry and Caroline stepping in for Ally, and her bad ankel.
So the team line-up was Caroline, Alice, Dave and Tony.
Men's doubles: Our men excelled themselves this afternoon. A complete white wash in the first set, winning 6-0. The second set started to slip away before Dave and Tony remembered that they were there to win, taking the set 6-2. A fantastic result.
The women did not fair so well. They started well and got to 4-4. It felt like a set that we should win. But before we knew it we'd lost the set 6-4. It didn't seem right that we'd lost as both the women knew that they were up against beatable opposition. But losing the set knocked us a bit and mistakes started to creep into our game. Second set was lost 6-1.
Mixed The first pair consisted of Caroline and Dave. It was a tightly fought match and, although the first set was lost 6-3, Dave and Caroline fought back. Some excellent play both at the net and from the baseline on the part of both our players secured a win in the second set at 6-4.
Alice and Tony faced the second pair and felt fairly confident that this could be a win. Before we knew it though we were 2-0 down. We then started to play with a bit of conviction and had soon brought it back to 4-4. Sadly the next 2 sets went to Claremont and we had let the first set slip through our hands. The second set started in the same way as the first and left us 2-0 down. Again we were confident that we could pull this back, but nothing went right and we were soon 5-0 down. We fought back to take the next game but couldn't break the next service game and lost the second set 6-1.
So overall a 5-3 loss. Very encouraging to be winning sets but equally frustrating as I think all of us left the match feeling we could have done better and this could have been one match that we won.
More match practice and I'm sure that elusive win will come soon. The champagne is at the ready!! |
